In this workshop, we’ll learn the basics of designing, making and animating Muppet-style sock puppets. By the end of the workshop, every participant will take home a puppet they have made themselves, along with practical skills they can use later at home for storytelling and play.
During the six-hour workshop, participants will learn about the brief history of the Muppets, as well as the basics of puppet-making and puppetry. Working together, they will design and create their own puppets, whilst discovering how shape, colours, materials, hair, eyes, mouths and other details contribute to the character’s appearance and help shape its personality.
Bringing a puppet to life requires not only its physical appearance, but also the creation of the figure’s unique personality and conscious movement. Through drama games and movement exercises, participants develop the motor skills required for puppetry and experience how a character’s emotions, intentions and traits can be expressed through movement.
The aim of the workshop is to give participants an insight into the fundamentals of creating a stage character through the interlinked processes of puppet-making, character development and animation.
